The Senate confirmed on Monday, July 18th, the nomination of Lester Crawford to serve as the commissioner of the
FDA. Lawmakers voted 78-16 in favor of the nomination. Crawford already has broad experience at the agency.
"Dr. Crawford is a dedicated public servant who has ably led the agency," said Michael Leavitt, secretary for the Department of Health and Human Services. "I look forward to working with Dr. Crawford and FDA as we seek to continue advancing the nation's health."
Crawford, a food safety expert with a doctorate in pharmacology, has served as acting FDA commissioner since March 2004. He also did a previous stint as acting commissioner from February to November 2002.
