More than 1.2 million people in the Region will die from cancer this year. Thirty percent of them, fathers, mothers, daughters and sons, could live by adopting a healthier life style. More than 250,000 people could prevent becoming another statistic if they avoided using tobacco. Through vaccination against human papilloma virus (HPV) and screenings, 80,000 new cases could be prevented. Men and women diagnosed with many types of cancer could be cured if they detect it early and treat it adequately. To help people win the fight against cancer, PAHO/WHO is collaborating with Member States and partners to increase capacity for comprehensive cancer control programs in the Region.
