Lannett Co. said Tuesday it received Food and Drug Administration approval for a generic version of the obesity drug phentermine.
Lannett said the FDA approved its 30-milligram phentermine capsules.
Phentermine is an amphetamine that helps suppress appetite, and it is used as a short-term obesity treatment along with diet and exercise. Lannett said its drug is a generic version of a product made by Novartis AG's Sandoz unit.
Phentermine was used as one of the two components of the diet drug fen-phen. The other component, fenfluramine, was withdrawn from the market after it was linked to heart damage.
In afternoon trading, Lannett stock lost 8 cents to $4.43.
