BRIGHT FUTURE: Johnson & Johnson tells analysts its prescription drug business is stronger than most competitors, with lots of new drugs on sale or on the horizon, and generic competition hurting less down the road.

COMING UP: J&J says it will seek approval of 11 new drugs by 2015, including what could be the first Alzheimer's drug to slow destruction of brain function.

THE STRATEGY: Like rivals, J&J is focusing research on diseases without good treatments but lots of potential users, and is expanding in emerging markets, the industry's key for sales growth.
