Baxter to Lay Off 400 Workers in Puerto Rico
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Baxter International Inc. is laying off 400 workers at a pharmaceutical plant in Puerto Rico.
The company is one of the largest employers in the central mountain town of Aibonito, where the plant is located.
The executive director of the island's Industrial Development Company says the layoffs will be gradual and that the agency will help find jobs for displaced workers. Antonio Medina said Friday that Baxter invested more than $2.5 million last year in a production line.
Despite the layoffs, Baxter-Aibonito general manager Enrique Moran says the company plans to expand its Aibonito plant and invest an additional $35 million to manufacture and pack intravenous solutions.
Baxter has about 4,000 workers in Puerto Rico distributed in Aibonito, Guayama and Jayuya.
